Perioperative Adjunct Magnesium Decreases Postoperative Opioid Requirements—A Meta-Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Objectives: Magnesium (Mg) is the fourth most common cation in the body and has numerous physiological activities and anti-nociceptive effects. The anti-nociceptive effects are primarily mediated by regulation of calcium influx into the cell and antagonism of the N-Methyl-D-aspartate glutamate receptors. Opioids are widely used as analgesics to minimize postoperative pain, but their use is associated with various side effects as well as the potential for addiction and tolerance. Systemic Mg has been proposed as an adjunct to minimize postoperative pain in numerous clinical studies. This meta-analysis aims to critically examine the ability of perioperative intravenous (IV) Mg to reduce opioid use and its’ side effects. Methods: A comprehensive literature search of Pub Med, Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials, and Google Scholar (1966-2016) was performed to identify all randomized control trials (RCTs) assessing the use of perioperative IV Mg in the reduction of postoperative opioid consumption.

Analgesic efficacy of continuous intravenous magnesium infusion as an adjuvant to morphine for postoperative analgesia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND The efficacy of perioperative intravenous magnesium administration on postoperative opioid use, opioid-related side effects (e.g., nausea and vomiting) and pain are uncertain, as randomized controlled trials on this topic have reported disparate results. The objective of this systematic review is to determine if perioperative magnesium reduces opioid use, opioid-related side effects,...
متن کاملPerioperative systemic magnesium to minimize postoperative pain: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
BACKGROUND Systemic magnesium has been used to minimize postoperative pain with conflicting results by clinical studies. It remains unknown whether the administration of perioperative systemic magnesium can minimize postoperative pain. The objective of the current investigation was to evaluate the effect of systemic magnesium on postoperative pain outcomes. METHODS A wide search was performed...
متن کاملMagnesium as an adjuvant to postoperative analgesia: a systematic review of randomized trials.
BACKGROUND Randomized trials have reached different conclusions as to whether magnesium is a useful adjuvant to postoperative analgesia. METHODS We performed a comprehensive search (electronic databases, bibliographies, all languages, to 4.2006) for randomized comparisons of magnesium and placebo in the surgical setting. Information on postoperative pain intensity and analgesic requirements w...
متن کاملMagnesium: is there a signal in the noise?
13 July 2013 T HE administration of intravenous magnesium for postoperative pain has been studied for decades. Some studies have demonstrated statistically significant benefits, whereas others have concluded that there is no efficacy. A meta-analysis by De Oliveira et al.,1 in this issue of AnEStHESiOlOgy, combines the results of many small, inadequately powered studies to provide a big picture...
متن کاملPerioperative single dose systemic dexamethasone for postoperative pain: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
BACKGROUND Dexamethasone is frequently administered in the perioperative period to reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting. In contrast, the analgesic effects of dexamethasone are not well defined. The authors performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the dose-dependent analgesic effects of perioperative dexamethasone. METHODS We followed the PRISMA statement guidelines. A wide search was perfor...
